Supervision Approach

I provide supportive, research-focused supervision that balances academic rigour with practical relevance. My supervisees benefit from access to advanced triaxial testing facilities, finite element modelling tools, and established industry partnerships. I encourage interdisciplinary collaboration and support students in developing both technical expertise and professional networks.

Current PhD Students

Details of current supervisees are available upon request. Please contact me for the latest information on active research projects.

Completed Supervision

A record of successfully completed PhD and MSc supervisions is maintained in my academic CV. Please refer to the downloadable CV for full details.

Available Research Topics

I am particularly interested in supervising students in the following areas:

Landslide Risk Assessment

Development of risk assessment frameworks for landslide-prone regions, including acceptable and tolerable risk criteria, community perception studies, and socioeconomic impact analysis.

Advanced Geotechnical Testing

Advanced triaxial testing of soils and aggregates, with focus on shear modulus behaviour, membrane correction techniques, and novel testing methodologies.

Numerical Modelling in Geotechnics

Finite element modelling of geotechnical structures including slopes, foundations, and pile systems, with emphasis on validation against experimental data.

Deep Soil Mixing & Ground Improvement

Development of novel binders and materials for deep soil mixing, including cementitious, pozzolanic, fibre-reinforced, and alkali-activated materials.

Construction Digitalisation

Building Information Modelling (BIM) adoption, virtual design and construction, and digital transformation in the construction industry.

Climate Resilience & Hydrology

Extreme rainfall analysis, flood risk assessment, and climate adaptation strategies for infrastructure in Southeast Asia.

How to Apply

Prospective PhD Students

If you are interested in pursuing a PhD under my supervision, please:

  1. Review my research themes to identify a topic of interest
  2. Prepare a brief research proposal (1-2 pages) outlining your proposed area of study
  3. Email your proposal along with your CV and academic transcripts to SoonYee.Wong@nottingham.edu.my

I will review your application and respond within two weeks. Competitive applicants may be nominated for university scholarships.

Prospective MSc Students

MSc students interested in research projects related to my expertise are welcome to get in touch. Please include your area of interest and academic background in your enquiry.
